I am enamored by Confederate Roses which are sometimes called Cotton Rose. Over the years I have posted photos of them on my blog 22 times. If you are like me and can’t get enough of the cabbage rose-shaped flowers that change color, search Confederate Rose on my blog. I’m obsessed with taking photos of my favorite flower, so here are some of the best for this year.
This beautiful Hibiscus mutabilis starts the day with a snowy white flower.
By late morning the color changes to light pink and grows darker in the afternoon.
By evening the Confederate Rose reaches a dark pink color.
The next morning the flower closes and is finished. Happily, the buds will continue to open for a few weeks.
Very pretty colors
My goodness, how wonderful! I have never seen these flowers before. The colour change is fascinating. Are
Sorry, pressed the button too quick! I wanted to ask, are they always white and pink or are there other shades possible too? Beautiful!
As far as I know Confederate Rose, Hibiscus mutabilis is only this color. Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus mutabilis comes in many colors and will grow in colder weather. I found an article you might find interesting. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/difference-between-confederate-rose-rose-sharon-81639.html
Oh thank you! That is really interesting. 😃
I LOVED this. I had no idea that they color developed like that.
I love these roses too. How long do they flower?
They bloom from about mid-October and a few are just finishing up. So I would say about a month depending on weather. They go fast if it’s really hot. Each flower is about day, but if it’s cool they turn more slowly.
Do you think they call them cotton rose due to the white or something else?
They are related to cotton. The botanical name is Hibiscus mutabilis and they grow in cotton country.
Are they sometimes called ‘cotton rose’ because of their resemblance to cotton blossoms, which also change color as they mature? I was going to make a point of getting some photos in the cotton fields this year, but I seem to have missed it by several months — the ginning already has begun.
They are actually related to cotton. Unfortunately, someone one decided to name the flower “rose” along with their other relative Rose of Sharon.
It packs a lot into one day!
Like most hibiscus, they usually last one day.
They are a gorgeous flower for sure! Beautiful photos😍
One of my favorites.
