Ruby Supreme Guava

It has made flowers but never fruit. Right before I left for an extended vacation, I snapped a quick, but an out-of-focus photo of the fruit not expecting it to amount to anything.
What a surprise awaited me when I came home. The tiny fruit grew to full size and was not eaten by the wild animals that inhabit my yard. I guess they considered it foreign food.
The guava’s botanical name is Psidium guajava and the inside is a beautiful dark pink color.
One of my California readers just posted some photos of her guavas. As far as I know, I’ve never tasted one. In Liberia, we had papaya, pineapples, and bananas galore, but no guavas.
They had a different taste and if I had more I would have made them into some kind of dish.
Looks like watermellon
It looks like a watermelon in miniature.
It does, but doesn’t taste at all like a watermelon.
I’ve had it as a jam and tasted sourly sweet. Nice.
Looks good. Just the one? Did you like it?
Just one and that took about three years. It was tart and maybe if I ever get two I will make something and add some sugar.
They make juice with them in Hawaii, pineapple, orange guava, it is called POG.
That also sounds familar. I may have had it in Hawaii. I think the addition of juices would help the tart flavor. Maybe I’ll have enough to juice next year.
There are always guava pastries!
Never had one… how did it taste?
It was tart. I think it would be better in a smoothie or juiced.
And it looks delicious! We don’t really see guavas here, I don’t know why.
I do have to bring it in on really cold days.
I think I have tasted guava, but it has been a while. I will have to buy one from Wal-Mart to refresh my memory.
It looks good… hope it tasted good too! Not sure I have ever eaten one.
That was the first one I ate.
Pretty fruit, looks luscious. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted guava. Are they sweet, or more mild?
Tart, but it was just exciting to grow it.
I love guava and cheese together. That I learned from my daughter in law whose from PR.
I will give it a try next time.
