Fantastic Fringe
Posted: April 8, 2019 Filed under: Gardening | Tags: Automatic Gardening, Chionanthus virginicus, Fringe Tree, Gardening, Southern Gardening, subtropical climate, Subtropical Gardening, Year-round gardening 13 CommentsFringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus) is a native to the southeast and because of that it is very easy to grow and virtually pest resistant. Surprisingly, this one is still alive after being hit by a tree during Hurricane Ike. Its lightly scented fringe-like flowers remind me of shredded coconut when they fall to the ground.
This fantastic Fringe Tree is really worth adding to a Southern landscape.
Blooming Bushes

The Loropetalum is one of the early bloomers. It has a slight scent.
Flowering Olive has tiny flowers with a big scent that drifts across the garden. It will bloom on and off throughout the year.
The flaming red Bottle Brush is a beacon that attracts hummingbirds in the spring.
Azaleas are always a show stopper in these parts, inspiring communities to put on azalea trails.
One bush that has it all is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Each flower displays three different colors and it is heavily scented.
This small tree had to be included for the fanciful flowers that hang from the Fringe Tree.
Pop, Pop, Pop

It seemed to happen over night. Each morning in spring holds a new surprise to start the day.
The Fringe Tree opened its leaves and wispy flowers practically at the same time.
Nature does a great job timing the Weeping Bottle Brush blooms with the return of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. The hummers would not pose for a photo!
This shrub popped full of flowers all at once. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow starts with purple flowers that fade to lavender and then to white.
